Warmth hit her face, Selina creaked open her eyes only to be blinded by the sun’s light. Groaning, she turned in the soft leaves on the forest’s ground and slowly rose up, stretching up to the heavens. She checked around her for any carnage, the lone carcase of a deer laid beside her not too far away. Sighs, “At least it wasn’t human.” she thought, getting up and heading to the river. Washing herself, Selina found a pack of clothes that she had hid nearby, dressed herself and headed back to her client's home.
She was spotted by one of the guards who waved to her, “Had a rough night?”
“You could say that.” Selina made her way back inside and up to the dinning hall, her client was having breakfast.
“Selina, there you are. Come, join me for breakfast.”
“That’s alright, I’ll have my own later.” her client beckoned her to sit down again and this time Selina decided to oblige, taking a piece of bread and smearing jam on it before wolfing it down...She then proceeded to take a plate and pile eggs and bacon on it before doing the same, washing it down with a cup of water.
Her client smiled at her, “You have quite the appetite, Selina.”
“Forgive me, I have acted in a very rude way.”
“Don’t worry about it, it just means you like my chief’s food.” He pauses, watching Selina take a few more bites, “Selina, where did you go last night? I couldn’t find you anywhere, no one could and that’s not a good thing if I couldn’t find my own bodyguard.”
She stops eating, “I was out on patrol in the woods.”
“That’s rather dangerous, I’ve heard wolves at night.”
“Wolves do not frighten me.”
Not when I am one…
“Of course not,” Her client got up from his seat, “Well if you would excuse me, I need to finish getting ready for today.”
“Get ready? I don’t remember you talking about any meetings today.”
He chuckles, “No, no meeting. Some friends of mine are taking a day trip and have invited me along. It’s not supposed to be dangerous but if you would like to come along I wouldn’t mind.” Selina rose from her seat and bowed, following after him as he left to go get ready. She went up to her room and prepped herself, even if it wasn’t supposed to be dangerous didn’t mean that she could let down her guard. Within the hour, Selina and her client were riding out to meet with his friends.
They arrived near the edge of town, her client’s friends waiting for them there. They greeted one another and went off together, walking for aways before they found a portal. Upon stepping through it, they were transported to a different town. As they walked around, Selina became confused by what she saw...iron carriages that drove themselves...handheld mirrors that captured people's souls… “What is this place?”
“This my dear Selina, is Avalon. A small town that is in another world from our own.”
Another world? Was that even possible?
After exploring it some more, she and her client stopped by an eating establishment to get some food. As they were eating, Selina’s client told her more about Avalon, how it was a world without magic (now that he had mentioned it, non human members of their group that had turned into humans after going through the portal). What he told her got her thinking, if she stayed here for the night...would she be safe from the curse? The group spent more time going around town, as the sun went down Selina managed to convince them to get drinks.
As the drinks came, the group slowly fell into a stupor and Selina managed to slip away. Upon opening the door she was greeted to the soft light of the moon, stepping out into it she found herself to be her normal self. There was no magic here, no magic meant no curse meaning that Selina could use this place to her advantage in order to break the curse, once and for all.
She strolled along the riverbank, taking in the night sky for the first time in years...her mind wanders back to Amelia… “Hold tight, I’m going to find a way back to you.”
