When Ashe had received a summon from his foster father, he left the library to immediately see what the man wanted. When he was a child, he had lost his parents at a young age. With two other siblings to take care of, Ashe had turned to a life of crime, until he had tried to steal from Lord Lonato. The Lord took him and his siblings in after Ashe’s failed attempt to steal from him and raised the trio as if they were his own flesh and blood.
Ashe entered the man’s study. Lonato was not the young man he had been all those years ago. HIs hair had gone sheer white and his mustache was neatly trimmed. He looked old and tired. Once in the room, Ashe made sure to bow to the man.
“You called for me, my Lord?” Ashe asked.
“Ashe, my dear boy…I hate to ask this of you but there have been strange going ons of late.”
“How so?”
Lonato steepled his fingers and looked down at a map on his desk. Ashe hesitated before he stepped up to look down on it as well. There were Xs randomly spread out throughout. There didn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason for the Xs. No connection between them aside from the fact they were all Xs.
“Strange magical…” Lonato paused, seemingly thinking of a word to use, “Circles have appeared and with them, travelers from far off places.”
Ashe felt his breath catch. That certainly couldn’t be good. Magical teleportation was supposed to be regulated. Was this an act of aggression against the small keep? They were such a small provenance after all. This was his home. He couldn’t bear to imagine any harm befalling it. Invaders coming in and… Ashe shivered.
“You want me to look into this?” Ashe surmised.
“Please, you are one of the few I can ask such a task of,” Lonato said.
Ashe gave the man a sympathetic smile. Once, his adoptive father may have tasked that to his older brother (the true heir) of the estate. Christophe had died, however, in a skirmish over a land dispute. Lonato had never quite been the same ever since.
“Of course. I’ll leave immediately,” Ashe said.
So he gathered his bow and his horse and headed out shortly after. He knew the woods of their lands like the back of his hand. And he was a good rider. So he had been overly confident in his ability to investigate this on his own. He had seen and dealt with a great many things in his time under Lord Lonato’s care. He had over estimated his capabilities.
