Byleth was unpacking her new room. Clothes were neatly hung in the closet. Her bookshelves were lined with games and very few books. Her bed was set up and a single dresser. But otherwise, she didn’t have much in the means of decoration. There was a picture of her, her father and her mother. She managed a small smile for the picture. Her mother passed away when she was young and she was raised by her father. He might not have known how to raise a girl, but he did his best.
Not to say there weren’t bumps along the way. Like when she started to become a woman. Then there was the fact she was raised by her father without a mother. So she preferred sports and video games to things most girls liked. She didn’t know how to apply makeup or someone could flirt with her point blank and she wouldn’t even know.
Still, she had been happy.
Up until she lost her job. She had turned gaming into a career online. She made videos of her walkthroughs, did blog posts and reviews of games and gaming merch. She delved into the lore of the worlds she played in. Played in all sorts of gaming leagues. She had kept up with the best of the best. Normally a male dominated occupation.
Until people said she wasn’t pretty enough. She wasn’t energetic or cute. She didn’t cater to the whims of her viewers. She didn’t wear cute clothes with short hems or sit in her chair provocatively. She wasn’t funny. She didn’t know how to tell a good joke to save her life. Her social ineptitude had scared off sponsors and fans alike.
Because the media began to stalk her, demanding to know why she had fallen from fame and what she was going to do about it, her father opted to move them somewhere else. Where the media wouldn’t be able to find her. Because she was certain, if one more photographer stalker tried to get at her, she would punch someone. That would do little to repair her shambled reputation as a gamer.
It would make her feel better.
“Honey, I made dinner!"
She winced. She couldn’t face her father. Not when he uprooted his entire life for her. To keep her safe and protected because she couldn’t handle stalkers.
“Not hungry, dad.”
Her stomach grumbled in protest. It had been hours since her last meal. If there was one thing she liked, it was a good meal. She shook her head. She deserved to sit up in her room as she sulked. Besides, as she was cleaning out her boxes of games, she found one she had never played before. The Magic Realm. It looked like a computer game so she decided to try the disc out. Perhaps it was the game she needed to get motivated again. A new game she could delve into and forget about her problems.
She powered on her computer, impatiently drumming her fingers against the desktop. As soon as the computer was ready, she inserted the disc into the tower. She put her headphones on, prepped her recording equipment. Her computer screen slowly turned black. The worlds The Magic Realm appeared in the middle.
Things went sideways when she hit ‘start’.
