Sunset’s pinks and oranges were slowly fading to a dark navy as Owen sat out on the high school lawn waiting. The chill of the air caused him to pull his coat closer but he didn’t feel cold. How could he? He was a buzz of excitement and the good news he was containing warmed his whole body. The lights of his mom’s car came into view and he got up, rushing towards the car. Owen slid into the car’s backseat and was greeted by his mom’s bright smile.
“So, did you get the results of the auditions? How did you do?”
He returned her smile, “I’m going to be playing Puck, mom.”
Her smile became even bigger, leading to a cheer, “That’s great! Oh honey, your first big role. We should celebrate, I know! Let's go pick up some take out and when we get home we can watch Wizard of Oz, your favorite.”
Owen laughs nervously, “I don’t think there’s a need to go that far, Mom.”
“Of course we do, you’ve been working on getting a major role since you were nine. And if your father starts up with his usual ‘doing theater is not practical’ speech, you know I’ll back you up.”
“Thanks Mom,” Owen looked up just in time to be blinded by a bright light coming from the other side of the road, “Ah, jeez! Why do some people not…” The car swerved suddenly trying to avoid the light...
CRASH!
--------
Owen woke up with a start, breathing heavily. He curled up really tight and placed his head on his knees. He wasn’t in the car, that happened a year ago. A year ago, he and his mom were in that car and got into an accident. Owen had survived plunging into the water, his mother had drowned. He couldn’t save her.
His alarm went off and he groaned before turning it off. Another day, another boring pointless day. He got up and went through the motions of getting ready before heading down to the movie rental shop below where his father already was. “Owen, about time. We just got a new shipment of movies today. I’d like you to organize them and put them on the shelves.” Owen just nodded and went into the back room.
He grabbed the box of movies and one fell off the top, “Huh?” Owen went down to pick it up, he turned the tape around in his hands to get a better look at it. The box art of the VHS looked like a red leather book cover with golden accents that gleamed, the title ‘The Magic Realm’ written on the side and front. “...no description on the back...curious…”
What was this feeling? It was like the more he looked at this tape it felt like something was...
“Oi, Owen, get a move on.” His father’s call broke him out of his train of thought, “We need to get those new movies on the shelves before we open up.”
“Yeah, I’ll be right there.” he put the movie back with the others and brought out the box to his dad. “Hey dad,” Owen held up the strange tape for his dad, “this movie doesn’t have a description on the back of it. I can’t tell what it’s about or what rating it is.”
His father looked the tape over, “Hmm, well with a title like that it’s probably some sort of fantasy movie. We could just stick it in the kids section.”
“And possibly scar a kid? No way, let me watch it first to see what it's about. Just to be on the safe side.”
After a few moments of thinking, his father finally nodded, “Okay, but after work. I’m not going to pay you to watch a movie.”
“Technically you are because I’m doing this for the shop.”

The day went by fast, Owen wasn’t quite sure what it was but slowly over the day a feeling of excitement bubbled up inside of him. The mysterious movie lingered in his thoughts, he was working but his eyes kept peeking up at the clock. He wished he could speed up time, a thought he had often had many times before. Eight o clock rolled around and they closed up the shop, Owen sprinted up the stairs to the apartment above.
“Hey wait a minute, Owen.” He turned back quickly towards his dad, Owen was handed a flier for auditions for Into the Woods. “I know you haven’t performed since...and I know I haven’t been very supportive of it in the past...but I think you should give it a try. Again.”
Owen looked back and forth between the flier and his dad, he took the filer, “Thanks...I’ll think about it.” he went inside his room and closed the door, Owen flopped onto this bed and sighed. He looked at the tape, sitting back up he went and turned on his TV. He pressed a button on his VHS player and popped the tape into the machine. He then hit play to start the movie…
---------
That was the last thing he remembered…He had turned on his TV to watch the movie...but now he was in the movie? Owen looked all around him, a lush forest surrounded him from all sides. He tried to think over everything again when he realized…”Wah! How did I get up here?” He was floating up in the air! Panic caused him to drop to the ground, upon raising up he realized that his hair was longer and now white. Owen took a handful of it and ran his hand through it, brushing his ear...he paused. His ears were now longer too. “Am...am I some sort of...elf? No wait, elves don’t have ears this long. I’m more of a sprite? I think that’s right...wait no...why am I…?”
A scream cut through his thoughts, Owen dashed off in it’s direction. He wasn’t thinking, just moving, someone needed help. He came upon a group of thugs trying to rob a young woman, he frowned. He picked up a thick branch from the ground and swung it at the biggest thug, it cracked and gained the attention of said thug. “Leave her alone!”
The thug laughed, “Looks like someone wants to play hero, boys.” The other thugs laughed, some rushed towards Owen but he managed to dodge by flying up causing the thugs to crash into the trees behind him.
“Woah, I’m going to need to get used to this…” He dodged several swings from weapons before one of the thugs threw his knife at Owen, he put up his arms to shield himself. A green light burst out from him, it hit the knife turning it into a daisy. “I...I can do magic?” laughs, “I can do magic!” He looked down at the thugs and smiled, “I think it’s about time you left.” He tried to fire off another burst of magic but couldn’t. Dodging another blade, Owen flew forward and picked up the girl in his arms and flew off with her.
They flew until they reached a city, Owen managed to land if not a little clumsy and put the young girl down. She looked up at him and smiled, “Thank you for rescuing me.”
“Your welcome,” She turned to leave, “Hey wait, could you tell me where I am? What is this place?”
The girl turned back to him, “I thought so, you are not from around here, are you?”
Owen shook his head, “No, and I can definitely tell now that I’m very far from home.”
