The sky was so clear, Jiro actually stopped for a moment to look. He'd been on his way home after a late doctor's appointment and had taken the shortcut through the park. The stars were shining enough to catch his attention though, and he couldn't remember seeing them this bright before. In Avalon, at least. Star-filled nights were common in the Magic Realm and you could always get a good view if you were in a place with no trees or tall buildings to block your view. Still, this came pretty close.

Tonight, Persephone was not in the Magic Realm. It was the first night in a long while. Usually, she only stayed in Avalon if she had work to do. Tonight, she did not. She hadn't been given much work to do in a while, which was starting to annoy her. She was about to pick up a second (well, third, technically, since she had a shop in the Magic Realm) job. She really did not want to, but she needed help paying the bills. For now, though, she found herself in the park. Right off of the paths, she had set her telescope up in the grass. It was a very nice telescope — a rather expensive one at that, that her job had paid for most of it. It couldn't see as much as an observatory telescope, but it did a pretty good job at seeing what she needed to see.
The skies were clear tonight, which was partially what prompted Persephone to stay in Avalon. Mars and Uranus would also be visible and, out of pure interest, Perse wanted to get a good look at them. It didn't matter how many times she looked at the planets or the stars, she always got enjoyment out of it. Too bad, though, there wasn't a meteor shower or something. That would really be spectacular. There wouldn't be one until August, however, so that was still a ways away.
So involved in looking up at the sky through her telescope (and occasionally checking it with her naked eye), she wasn't aware of anyone else in the park. She was sort of oblivious in that way.

It looked like Jiro wasn't the only one taking advantage of the pretty night view. He spotted the woman first, gazing up every so often. Then he saw the telescope that she was also looking into. It almost reminded him of a camera, the way it was propped up on the stand. Although it was probably a lot more complicated than a camera. There were probably all sorts of little bits in there that made it work its magic. Despite Jiro had a knack for fixing things, he'd never tried something like that. It made him a bit curious. "Nice telescope you got there," he said, giving a friendly wave.

Persephone only noticed the other person when he spoke. She turned to look at them, immediately getting the sense that there was something more to him. She ignored that, however, as he had complimented her telescope and she suddenly found herself feeling like a proud mother. She grinned widely. "Why thank you! She's my pride and joy," she laughed, gesturing for the stranger to come on over. If he had the sense to compliment her telescope, she felt it would be safe enough for him to come over and get a better look at it. "Do you know much about telescopes?" She asked.

Jiro got that familiar feeling as he got closer, that feeling that told him this woman had some kind of connection to the Magic Realm. People who'd been there could just sense that sort of thing. As for what she might be or looked like there, he didn't have a clue. But that was rarely the first thing he talked about with people who had a disc of their own. Heck, some just kept to themselves and didn't talk to anyone in Avalon about it at all. Jiro had never pressured people he met like that, although he did try to keep the online forums he was running as open and friendly as possible in case they wanted to join in and talk with people about it. He was getting side tracked though. The woman asked him if he knew anything about telescopes and he shook his head. "Technically no, but it's my job to fix stuff, and I like figuring out how things work." Although granted, the telescope was probably more complicated than the handyman jobs he was used to. It was like his prosthetic arm. If it got messed up in a complicated way, he liked to leave it to the professionals to figure out what was causing the problem. He didn't want to tinker with it and make it worse.

Persephone gave him a rather impressed look when he said that his job was to fix stuff. "Well, I'll keep that in mind in case my telescope ever breaks," she told him with a grin. She was usually very careful with it, but sometimes things happened out of anyone's control. On most cases, she could probably just send it back to the manufacturer and get it fixed at the expense of her work, but if it was something small, she might consider bringing it to this man. Well, so long as he actually had good reviews. She'd probably ask around about that first. Not because she didn't trust the man, but she didn't know him.
"Would you like to come over and check it out?" She asked him then. She wouldn't mind sharing it and showing him the sky. She loved to show people the sky. "I'm Persephone, by the way," she added after a moment. Always best to introduce yourself to someone you were inviting over to you.

Jiro was glad to see that the woman seemed to at least consider maybe having him check it out if the telescope ever broke in the future. Although he'd probably have to dome reading on that first before attempting to repair anything. She offered him to take a look at it. "Oh, sure," he said, taking a quick peek through it. As he figured, the telescope was pretty nifty, and any stars he looked at looked crystal-clear, as if they were within hands-reach. "Nice quality on this," he said. The woman introduced herself as Persephone and he looked up. "I'm Jiro," he said, holding out his left hand to shake. Strangers usually stared if he held out his prosthetic right arm when first introducing himself.

"Nice to meet you Jiro," she smiled at him, taking his hand into hers with a firm, but friendly, shake. "Yeah, I was given it through work. I work as an astronomer, so it helps me when I have to do work from home. It's nothing compared to the large observatories, but it's definitely better than a run-of-the-mill telescope." She glanced back up at the sky with her naked eye. Part of her was sad that she couldn't use the abilities that she had in the other realm here as well. What she wouldn't give to be able to talk to the stars in the sky that she was so very much familiar with. She wondered what they would have to say; what stories they could tell.

"An astronomer? Wow. Didn't think there'd be one in a small town like this," Jiro said. People tended to move away for big careers like that. Then again, those who could go into the Magic Realm found it hard to leave Avalon, although a couple did. For some, the Magic Realm helped them get through a period of their lives, but they eventually wanted to move on. Jiro doubted he'd hit a point like that though. He loved the place too much.

Persephone let out a small laugh and shrugged. "To be fair, I haven't done much in town. I'm slightly on leave right now, mostly just doing at-home calculations and whatnot," she explained to him, "My dad lives in the town and he's needed some help being taken care of. That's how I ended up here. Although, I do really love the town!" She made sure to emphasize this last part. She really did love Avalon, as did she also love the Magic Realm.

Oh, that explained it. That happened every once in a while. Some people never left and grew old here and their kids sometimes came back to take care of them. This was probably a nice place to retire to. Pretty quiet compared to the city, lots of shops, and the closest thing to crime here was kids playing ding dong ditch every once in a while. "I like it to, honestly," he said. "Pretty different from where I used to be."

Persephone was a curious person. She had a very little filter. She wasn't sure if where Jiro had been before wasn't something to be talked about, but he had mentioned it, so that meant it was free-game to ask about, right? "What were you used to before? She questioned him, glancing his way after having been observing one of the satellites above that had been moving past.

"I was in the army, stationed overseas for a while," Jiro replied. "Some...well, stuff happened, and now I'm back here. Not sure if fixing stuff is what I want to do in the long-term, but it's what I'm good at, so that's good enough for now." Maybe if something came along that sparked his interest, Jiro felt like maybe he could do some other job around town. But nothing had really caught his eye so far. His parents had suggested possibly getting an online degree to open up some doors, but Jiro didn't want to add school expenses on top of his medical costs.

The army? Persephone thought to herself. She could see it. Jiro seemed to have the look of an army person now that she got a better look at him. She knew that when he said some stuff, that he probably didn't want to elaborate, so she didn't ask him about it. She smiled though. "Sometimes it's good to do what you're good at, even if it's not what you'll be doing the rest of your life. Things change; are always changing."

"Don't I know it," Jiro said quietly. A couple of years ago, he'd never imagined losing his arm, coming back home, and finding the Magic Realm. Then again, nobody could probably expect finding a computer game that was actually a portal to a magical world. He glanced at Persephone, wondering if she'd ever star-gazed there. There were probably a couple of good spots, and a whole lot less lighting so you could actually see the stars. "So...do you star-gaze anywhere else? Besides Avalon?" he asked, although he wondered if maybe that was too vague of a hint of trying to ask about Persephone's life in the Magic Realm.
