The weather was chilly, but that didn't deter Soleil from venturing out to the park. She had an hour break from work and felt that the fresh air would do her some good. She had bundled up enough to keep herself warm while waking the paths and heading towards the garden. Despite it being winter, Soleil still liked the gardens. Although they weren't as vibrant as they were during the spring, it was still peaceful. Probably because not so many people went there in the winter. It was quiet and allowed for her to think, which was what she was doing now. She was currently going over her schedule in her head. She was going to go back to the Magic Realm tomorrow night, as she was going to perform at a small venue in Aeston. She was looking forward to the beachy climate, and also hoped that she would have enough time to chill at the beach. She also had some more performances that weekend, but still nothing huge. She enjoyed her small little gigs, performing for small crowds that seemed to really get engaged.
Soleil took a breath. Exhaling, she watched the mist that her breath manifested as float upward towards the sky. She shoved her hands in the pocket of her jacket for some extra warmth and hummed gently to herself as she continued on through the garden.

"Maybe I should have waited until later to return you to your home," Basil muttered to the fox squirrel that he had in a small cat carrier. He had lost count of how many times people had asked if they could see his cat, or small dog, only to be met with a cold glare by Basil. He was sick of telling people that it was not a cat or a dog but in fact a squirrel that he was trying to release back into the wild, and NO you may not touch it.
The squirrel had been hit by a kid on a bike a few days ago. It had been touch and go since Basil had been working on the squirrel in between patients and on his own time. He was extremely proud of the success of the surgery, and the fact that he was able to save the little rodent. He turned into the garden hoping to avoid any other people.

Soleil was a little surprised to see another person come into the garden. They caught her eye mostly because they were the only other person, but other factors soon attributed to her continued interest. For one, he was carrying a small cat carrier. This was definitely an odd place to have a cat carrier, so she couldn't imagine he actually had his pet in there. Why would he bring a cat or dog here inside of a carrier? Why not a leash? Yes, that was odd indeed. She wondered what he had inside of it. The other thing that she noticed was that he had been to the Magic Realm. It was one of those things that other users could tell. It was strange, looking at someone and knowing, while also being left in the dark as to who they were.
Curiosity overwhelming her, as it often tended to do, Soleil found herself walking over toward the man. As she drew closer, but not immediately in his area, she called out to him. "Hello there," she called out, "do you need any help?" She wasn't sure what she could help him with, but she figured offering to do so was a good gesture of goodwill.

Basil let out a slightly annoyed sigh at the offer of help. Well, He thought. At least she didn't just assume that the squirrel was an animal she could pet. Taking a breath to at least try and be civil, he turned toward the young woman who had spoken. He tilted his head slightly at the odd sense he got from her. He couldn't place it, which irritated him, the vet hated not knowing what his brain was trying to tell him.
"Not unless you know how to deal with releasing squirrels that have just recently recovered from multiple surgeries." He responded before turning back to looking for a good tree to release the rodent. He tried to think of where he could have seen her before that would explain the sensation he was getting from her.

Soleil wondered if he had been able to sense the feeling too. She knew he should have, but she wasn't entirely sure how new he was to the magic realm. She didn't mention it at first, however, as they had other things they were talking about. At the mention of a squirrel, Sol's eyebrows rose. She offered a sweet smile and admitted, "I'm afraid I do not. Poor guy, though. How did he end up in such a state?" She took note of him looking around and figured he was looking for a place to release the squirrel. She pursed her own lips, taking in their surroundings.
"Would that one do?" She asked as she pointed over to a particularly tall oak tree. It had lower branches which might have been easier to put the squirrel on. After a moment, though, she found she couldn't keep herself from asking. "So, uhm, how long have you been able to travel to the other place." She didn't mention it as The Magic Realm in case, for whatever reason, someone else stumbled upon them and had no clue what they were talking about. She didn't want to seem crazy to other people.

Right when Basil was going to dismiss her as useless she pointed out a tree that was ideal for the small squirrel. Ok, not completely useless. He thought. "He got hit by a bike a few days ago." He explained. "Kid didn't even have the decency to bring him in, I had to grab him on my way out of the office." Since the squirrel was still recovering from surgery he needed someone to hold the carrier steady as he opened the crate. "Can you hold this? So I can open the door." He said offering her the carrier. "It needs to be held steady."
He froze when she asked the second question. If he was being honest, he was secretly hoping that the other place had been a fever dream. A hallucination from being over worked, since he had been clean for a year and a half. "Once." He said stiffly, not really wanting to dwell on the experience.

Soleil pouted out her lower lip as she glanced into the cage. "Poor guy," she found herself saying out loud. If he had been a domesticated animal, she would have offered a comforting pet. He wasn't, however, so she kept her hands to herself. She was smart enough to know not to pet a wild animal, injured or otherwise. "He's lucky that you saw him, though." If he hadn't passed by, perhaps the squirrel wouldn't have made it.
Soleil nodded as the man held out the carrier. She took it into her hands and made sure to hold it as steady as possible. She wasn't about to be a surgeon anytime soon with how steady she was, but it was enough that she wasn't shaking the carrier all around. Sol couldn't help but notice when the man froze. Perhaps he hadn't had a good experience in the other realm. Even his response suggested that. "I see," she said, "I've been going for a good while now." She said nothing more about it, however, because she didn't want to frighten the man off.
"By the way, I'm Soleil. It's nice to meet you," She smiled over at him.

See people CAN ask for your name without stupid sayings. Basil thought. The longer he spent with this woman, sorry Soleil, the more he liked her. She wasn't as annoying as other people. "Basil." He said as he opened the door to the crate. Once the door was open the squirrel cautiously stuck his nose out and sniffed the air. Expecting this, Basil put an almond on to the branch a foot away from the entrance to the crate. Once the squirrel saw the nut, he ran out of the crate. "Go on now." He said once the squirrel had finished eating. At the vets voice, the rodent scampered away.
"I've always been more in-tune with animals." He explained. He knew that if he didn't have a habit of watching the ground when he walked, he would have missed seeing the squirrel being hit by the bike. He hadn't seen the kid who had hit him, only the back of the boys head.
"Must have had a better experience than I did then." He muttered. "Still trying to wrap my brain around what the hell happened."

Soleil smiled when he introduced himself. It was brief, but she appreciated that he felt comfortable enough to give her his name. She watched with bated breath as the squirrel stuck his nose out and sniffed the air. She didn't want to move and scare him. She continued to watch as Basil put a nut on a tree branch. Quickly, the squirrel ran out to get it. Soleil smiled widely and finally allowed herself to breathe and move now that the squirrel was out. "Bye little friend," she called out gently to him, "be safe!" She hoped he'd live a long and happy life.
"That's a really good trait to have, though," she told him, "Plus, most animals are kinder than humans." She shrugged. She didn't mind people, though. She was a well-known people person, but she did love animals too. She didn't judge, anyway. If Basil was more of an animal person than a people person, then that was that.
Soleil observed him as he responded — well, muttered. Clearly, he hadn't had a good time. "It was a little weird trying to get used to, but I've made a nice little life for me there. It is a bit weird, though, when you think about it. It's like living two different lives. It can get a bit confusing."

"No kidding," Basil said letting out a rare chuckle. Animals never judged him for being different from other people. If anything they probably thought Basil was a strange kind of animal. Many people had made comments about how Basil sometimes acted like the animals he worked with. Even growing up, aside from Justin, he had very few human companions.
"Definitely had a better experience than me then." He said tracking the movements of the squirrel as it scampered out of sight.
