Alastor finished securing his wares in the back of his wagon, he looked back at his creator’s mansion. It would be so easy to just walk back inside and spend the day doing some research or crafting a new magic item but then he wouldn’t get paid for his commissions. Sighing, he got into the driver’s seat and rode out towards town. It took him about half of the day to reach the small town, eyes falling upon him the moment the hooves of his horse reached the edge of town. This never got any easier.
He could feel them following him as he reached his first stop. Alastor was greeted by the smile of a woman who was putting laundry on the line, “You're a full day early.”
“I put a rush on this since it’s for a special day.” He went to the back of his wagon and produced a small wooden box that he then handed over to the woman. She opened the lid and looked at the contents inside, a paint set. “Illusionary paint, when he paints with these the images he creates will seem like they are alive.” Alastor dug into his pocket and produced a sketch pad, dipped his claw into one of the paints he drew a rabbit with it. When finished, the rabbit wiggled its ears and then hopped across the page.
“Thank you, you always do such wonderful work.” The woman handed over a small pouch of coins.
“Your words are very kind.” He waved goodbye and went on his way, the eyes returning to him. He made several other stops, delivering other items that he had been asked to make, always being watched by people on the street. Some darted away, averted their eyes when he looked at them. Alastor had been coming to this town for the past five years but still people seemed to be on edge when he entered. One thought drifted into his head, ‘It wouldn’t be this way if I looked like them.’
He stopped outside his last stop, Alastor went up to the door and knocked on it. “Hello? Mrs. Millgilicutty?” No answer...maybe she was asleep? He knocked again, the door slowly creaked open. Worried what might mean, Alastor went inside and put the package down. He had to lower his head to avoid hitting the various objects that hung from the ceiling. There was no sight of his client but he noted a bright light in the backyard. He went out to find a strange glowing circle in Mrs. Millgilicutty’s backyard. “Oh, what have you been up to, old woman.”
Curious about what it might be, Alastor got down and reached out a hand towards it. His hand felt warm and tingly for a moment before the light swelled and enveloped him. Alastor tumbled forward, into a garden and he heard a loud shriek, “My rutabaga!” He quickly got up to see Mrs. Milligilicutty glaring at him.
“I’m so sorry, Mrs. Millgilicutty.” He started to brush off the dirt on his pants, “I was just delivering the invisibility cloak you had ordered when I noticed the door wasn’t locked and I was worried that…” that’s when he noticed that his hand was not furry, “...what?”
“Alastor Pembroke? Is that you?”
“I believe so...do you happen to have a mirror Mrs. Milligilicutty?” The old woman saw him inside the house, a near identical version of her house...but it was different. Less herb witch vibes and more crazy cat lady...so not too different actually. Mrs. Milligilicutty handed Alastor a mirror, what stared back at him was a human face. “...I’m human…”
“Here in Avalon, yes. Happens to everyone who comes here.”
“I’m sorry, Avalon? Where’s that?”
