Jiro gave a little sigh of relief. At least he was explaining things clearly. "Oh, I don't think I know your name," he said. "My name's Jiro." He held out a hand for the woman to shake. At her comment about the route to the Magic Realm changing over the years, he gave a little shrug and said "I guess they're going with the times? Who knows, maybe we won't even use computer discs to get here in the future. Maybe they'll have a phone app instead." He gave a little laugh.

"Oh, I'm Byleth. I just moved to town... er, Avalon, this week," she said.
She smiled and shook his hand. Things were still a little uncomfortable, but this was simply how things were. There wasn't much else she could do but get used to things. She would have to encourage her father not to play the game. She wasn't entirely sure he would be okay with magical realms and games being a portal to parallel worlds.
"You joke, but I certainly can see a phone app as their next method. They already have entire online games in an app format."

Byleth was an unusual name, but Jiro wasn't about to judge. His name was common in Japan, but in a little town in the U.S., not so much. At least she agreed that a phone app would probably show up eventually. "The only thing I'm wondering now is what Avalon decided you were going to be," he said, taking another look at her. "When people come here, they're anything from wizards to vampires to fairies. Or they're still regular humans, just with a bit more sword skills or something." Byleth looked like an ordinary human, but that didn't mean that there still wasn't some magical possibilities with her. Creatures like werewolves or witches looked like regular people.

Byleth looked down at herself. That was a good question. She wasn't entirely sure what she was supposed to be either. She had armor pieces and a sword, but she also had a long cloak with dangling sleeves. She checked her ears. Rounded tips. So not an elf. Then an inspection of poking her teeth proved no vampire fangs. No tail. Not an animal person. No extra cat ears. Not a cat girl, thank goodness for that! No claws. Not a werewolf. No hooves. Not a satyr or centaur.
"All signs point to human. Unless there's something I'm not seeing?" she asked.

"Looks like it," Jiro said. "Although the first time I used any kind of magic was in a fight." He looked around, half wondering if maybe there was a troll or goblin they could try. Although maybe throwing Byleth into a battle on her first day would be a bit much. Jiro had been attacked by a direwolf when he'd first come here and that was a lot to handle on top of everything else.

Byleth checked herself again, this time looking for weapons. Unlike a game, she wasn't getting much of a tutorial in this. She found a sword sitting on her hip. So she drew the blade and looked at it. The steel glinted in the light peeking between the trees. It felt heavy in her hand, but balanced. She had never fought with a sword before. Her games that involved virtual reality non-withstanding.
"How would I figure out if I had magic?" she asked.

"Um..." Jiro wondered if he could describe this right. He'd been coming here so much, his magic was just natural to him at this point. He hardly had to think about it anymore. "I guess it's kinda...something you feel inside you, like a spark. Tapping into it is the easy part. The hard part is learning how to use it and actually pull of spells how you want them to." He paused for a moment before sheepishly adding "Okay, that kind of didn't make any sense. Uh, in your case, I'm guessing it'll show itself when you need it, if you have it at all."

Byleth took a deep breath and tried to focus on this 'spark' inside of her, but she didn't know what that spark felt like. Or what she was supposed to recognize as magic. She certainly hadn't had a 'spark' in her life for a while after losing her job as a professional gamer. She had taken some time off to get her head situated. Now she was thrown into this. And she was certain this wasn't something she could show online.
"Well, I can explore that later," she said. "But it's not your fault. You've been extremely helpful."

"You're sure to find out eventually," Jiro said. "This place doesn't like to keep what you are a mystery for very long." Maybe that was a perk the magic just wanted to give people when they came here. The Magic Realm was supposed to be an escape after all, not make things worse. Byleth complemented Jiro on the help he'd given so far and he said "No problem. Finding someone who knows the ins and outs of this place can make it seem a little less overwhelming." He'd heard a few stories about people ending up in the middle of nowhere when they first arrived and taking a long time to find someone to explain what was going on. Jiro felt like if he could help people avoid that by giving them a little help, then that was what he wanted to do.

"Where in this world am I?" she asked. "And... should I assume there's a kingdom? Uh... any... topics I should know about or avoid?"
She didn't know much about this place. Getting some basics out of the way would help her stick out less. She couldn't be sure if every civilian in this place knew about what was going on. She knew the last thing you wanted to do in a game was to rock the boat. Being caught unaware or making a social faux pas could be potentially life threatening.

Byleth had more questions, and while Jiro was always down for explaining things, maybe it was best to give her a small taste of what this place was like, something that wasn't too overwhelming. "How about I answer that while we head to Aberdeen City?" he said, pointing behind him. "That's where the castle is and you can get a feel for how this place works."

"Yeah, I guess you're right."
She looked around them. He had a point. She wouldn't learn anything if she stayed put where she was. Honestly, she was just grateful she ended up in the woods near someone who knew what was going on. And not in the middle of town where people would freak out if she just poofed into existence. That could have been very bad for her.
"Lead the way?"

Byleth seemed to like the idea, which pleased Jiro. At least she wasn't so wary that she hesitated in following him to a place she hadn't been before. But she seemed to trust him at this point. Jiro just hoped nothing too crazy happened on the way to the city. Some people were able to dive head-first into this place, but others needed to take it slow. "Sure. This path here should take us right to the main road and we follow that all the way to the city," he said, pointing. "That's the good thing about this place. There's usually a road if you're looking for something like a village or town, so it's hard to miss those. If you're looking for anything else, that's kind of a different story." The main roads wouldn't exactly lead you to a band of thieves or a hidden fairy hideaway. But if you were looking for any heavily populated place, the main roads were your best bet.

"Lead the way," she said.
She gestured for him to go first. She wanted to linger behind him, just a little and look around. She had never seen forests so green before. Not unless they were video game forests. She wasn't much of an outdoor person to begin with. She spent most of her time playing video games. Her dad did what her to get out more, but she was pretty sure this wasn't what he had in mind.

Jiro gave a nod and headed down the path first, glancing back once to make sure Byleth was behind him. She was looking around with interest and he slowed his pace a little bit so she could take her time taking in the scenery around here. "Kind of blows your mind, doesn't it?" he commented. The woods here were so different from back in Avalon. You could practically feel the magic brimming inside every tree, every rock. And every so often there was the call of an animal. Some were the usual things, like birds tweeting or squirrels chattering. Some were a bit more unfamiliar though, and while Shiro was still learning to distinguish them, he could at least tell the difference between a dragon and a troll roar now.
